It's part of the Becker College mission to create an open and diverse community that welcomes the exchange of ideas with respect, and fosters empowerment for all individuals. If you're a prospective or incoming student, you might like to know that as of this past fall, Becker took one giant step toward equality. And we'll take another one soon!
In October 2014, we received a donation of 16 all-gender restroom signs from MyDoorSign for use on our Worcester and Leicester campuses. In its goal of depicting all inclusiveness, MyDoorSign uses simple icons, such as a toilet or geometric patterns. (See an example here.) And what's even more powerful? Implementing gender-neutral restroom signs was a student-driven initiative, put into motion by Becker's Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) organization.
Ray Sgambati '14, a former GSA president, said, "We wanted to convey that no matter who you are, you feel comfortable and have the right facilities to use on Becker's campus. We also wanted to make sure that we were upholding our core value of diversity; these restroom signs help us achieve that goal."
The signs are distributed all throughout Becker's academic facilities, and extend to the residences in both campuses' Victorian homes. What does this mean for our students? Well, it means that without gender assignment, each and every individual within the Becker community can feel both welcomed and accepted. (And THAT is something to be proud of.)
In addition, beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year Becker College will be offering Gender Inclusive Housing options for all current and returning students. This housing policy allows any upperclass students (sophomores, juniors, or seniors), regardless of gender identity, to choose to live together. Gender inclusive housing is available in six residence halls, including both apartment style living and traditionally styled halls.
