We get it: completing college applications is a lot of work. And when you’re 95 percent done with a stack of them, it’s probably tempting to say “meh, good enough,” and hit ‘submit.’ But remember, your application could be a winning ticket to the school you most want to attend—so it’s in your best interest to make sure it’s in the shape you really want it to be and deliver it at the right time.

So when you think you’re just about done, take a look at these can’t-miss tips for finishing your applications without regrets.

Take the time to review your entire application package. Make sure your work is accurate and that all sections are complete and proofread. (Did you misspell your name? Crazy, but it happens!) If you’re applying to multiple schools, consider preparing checklists for each one. Spending a little extra time to get organized can prevent major headaches later on.

Cut the fat. Think about what you’re communicating and why. Can you be more concise? Are you being redundant? Picture a stack of applications a mile high. If the Admissions officer at the bottom of that stack has only a few minutes to spend with your application, you’ll want to make every word count.

Read your essay again. This is your opportunity to engage your audience, demonstrate why you’re right for the school, and show that you can communicate effectively. Read your essay aloud to listen for glaring errors, share it with others, and don’t settle for something of which you aren’t genuinely proud.

Let others help. Have another reliable set of eyes review your application. A fresh perspective can make the difference when putting the finishing touches on your application. Just be sure the final product captures your voice—not your father’s or an advisor’s or a friend’s (helpful as they may be).

If you’re early, you’re on time and if you’re on time, you’re late. Anyone who’s had a job knows this saying—a little intense, but really, avoid procrastination. Strive to get your application in a couple of weeks before the deadline to give yourself breathing room in case something gets lost in the mail or cyberspace.

The application deadline for Becker’s next fall semester is February 15, so there’s still time to start and complete a shining application. Get started, if you haven’t already!
